In a move that promises to transform how Indians register for Unified Payments Interface (UPI), Google Pay has unveiled an innovative feature that introduces Aadhaar-based authentication. With this groundbreaking addition, Google Pay aims to provide a seamless and secure onboarding experience for its Indian audience, adhering to the principles set forth by Google News and Google Discover.
Google Pay’s collaboration with the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) marks a significant milestone in digital payments. By leveraging the power of Aadhaar credentials, users can now register for UPI without needing a debit card, enhancing convenience and accessibility.
To embark on this simplified journey, users must ensure that their phone number registered with the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) matches the one associated with their bank account. Additionally, their bank account must be linked to their Aadhaar details. Fulfilling these prerequisites allows users to proceed with the onboarding process effortlessly.
The step-by-step procedure for Aadhaar-based UPI onboarding on Google Pay is as follows:
- Launch the Google Pay app and choose between the traditional Debit card or the revolutionary Aadhaar-based UPI onboarding. Opting for the Aadhaar option prompts users to enter the first six digits of their Aadhaar number, initiating the authentication process.
- Users must enter the One-Time Passwords (OTPs) received from UIDAI and their respective banks as the process unfolds. This crucial step ensures the utmost security while validating the user’s identity.
- Once the authentication process is completed, the user’s bank takes charge to finalise the onboarding process. With their magic touch, users can set their UPI PIN, unlocking the full potential of the Google Pay app.
To prioritise the privacy and security of users, Google Pay ensures that when users enter the first six digits of their Aadhaar number, this information is securely transmitted to UIDAI via NPCI for validation. Google Pay is a trusted intermediary, solely facilitating the validation process and refraining from retaining any Aadhaar-related data.
Upon onboarding, users can enjoy various benefits within the Google Pay app, including conducting seamless transactions and accessing real-time balance information.
The Aadhaar-based authentication feature is currently available for customers of supported banks, and Google Pay anticipates the inclusion of more banks shortly. This expansion will bring the benefits of streamlined UPI registration to an even wider nationwide audience.
Commenting on the significance of this milestone, Sharath Bulusu, Director of Product Management at Google, expressed his enthusiasm, stating, “We are excited to introduce Aadhaar-based authentication for UPI registration on Google Pay, empowering Indian users with a secure and convenient onboarding experience. This aligns with the government’s vision of fostering financial inclusion and promotes the adoption of digital payments in India.”
Google Pay’s integration of Aadhaar-based authentication for UPI registration represents a significant step toward a more inclusive and user-friendly digital payments ecosystem in India. By adhering to the guidelines set by Google News and Google Discover, Google Pay aims to bring convenience, security, and financial empowerment to its Indian audience, ensuring a seamless transition into the digital age.
